City council takes first steps to fill vacant seat

ALAMOSA — Initial steps are being taken this week to fill the vacancy on the Alamosa City Council that is the result of Councilor Kristina Daniel and Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Charlie Griego stepping down from office and Councilor Michael Carson being elected to take Daniel’s place as councilor-at-large.

The city has posted a notice stating it is seeking “applications” from individuals who are interested in being appointed to represent Ward Four, the ward previously represented by Councilor Carson.

According to the posting, interested individuals must live in Ward Four, be a qualified elector (that is, a person legally qualified to vote in an election) who is at least 21 years of age, and have been a resident of the city of Alamosa for at least one year.

Anyone who meets that criteria and is interested in representing Ward Four on the city council should submit a letter of interest to the City Clerk of Alamosa, including the reason for being interested in serving on the city council and the physical address proving they reside within Ward Four boundaries.

All letters of interest should be sent to Alamosa’s City Clerk by the end of Jan. 10, 2024.

In terms of the city council’s process in appointing a new council member, City Manager Heather Sanchez told the Valley Courier that a work session has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2024, where members of the city council will discuss the interview questions.

Three weeks later, a second work session is scheduled for Jan. 24 when members of the city council will conduct interviews with individuals who have expressed an interest in serving.

Following that work session, a special meeting (termed “special” because it is outside the city council’s standard calendar) will be held during which council members will appoint the new member.

Both work sessions are open to the public.

Letters of interest should be submitted to the City Clerk at 300 Hunt Ave., P.O. Box 419, Alamosa, CO 81101 or via email to cityclerk@ci.alamosa.co.us. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 10, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. For additional information, contact City Clerk, Holly Martinez, at 719-589-2272.
