I have been hearing much about what a “disaster” the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been. This seems to be the stance that Mr. Cory Gardner, our senator seems to have. This also seems to be Mr. Scott Tipton’s view as well. I would like to ask Mr. Gardner and representative Tipton to have town hall meetings to hear what his constituents have to say about this issue.
I am someone who is currently enrolled through the Colorado Health Exchange and benefited from this coverage when I lost my insurance. Because I am enrolled I was confused when I heard that health care was unaffordable because of ACA. I looked at the Obama Care website and found statistics from 2016.
The 2016 uninsured rate remains at an all time low with the uninsured rate at 11.9 percent for Americans 18 – 64 and 8.6 percent for all Americans. 8.6 percent is down from 9.1 percent as of 4th quarter 2015, and 15.7 percent before the Affordable Care Act was signed into law.
I also looked at the statistics from InsuranceHealth.org and found this information about our own Colorado Health Exchange:
172,361 enrolled for 2017; 27 percent are new to the exchange
If the argument is that insurance is unaffordable, I cannot imagine that the number of people enrolling would be increasing by this much. I know that I am feeling uncomfortable with our senator and our representative speaking on my behalf without giving me a chance to voice my concerns. I have checked Mr. Tipton’s website and have found documents that have (according to Mr. Tipton) been proposals to replace the Affordable Care Act. These documents are hard reading for the average constituent. A public event to explain these documents would be welcome by this constituent. I would like to ask that our senator and representative allow us to meet with them by having a public event so that this and other important issues can be discussed.
