COSTILLA COUNTY — One person is dead and another is seriously injured following a single-vehicle crash on westbound Highway 160 Monday, according to a press release issued by Colorado State Patrol.

According to the release, a 19-year-old male driver — who was restrained — was seriously injured and transported via ambulance to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa. He was later flown via Flight for Life to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

A 19-year-old male passenger, who the release said was not restrained, was pronounced dead on scene.

According to the release, at 8:59 a.m. a 2003 Saturn LS200 sedan was traveling westbound on Highway 160 approximately three miles east of Blanca when the driver drifted off the right side of the roadway and down a slight embankment into a dry ditch.

The Saturn, the release said, continued along the ditch before colliding with a metal culvert. The car reportedly rotated counter-clockwise and came to a rest on its wheels facing south.

The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit.
