MONTE VISTA — Two outstanding Monte Vista High School seniors, Angelo Rodriguez and Grace Beckner who excelled in academics, athletics, and community service, were awarded the Glen E. Martinez Memorial Scholarship of $1000 each on May 21st, which will assist these seniors to begin their journey to pursue a higher education.

This scholarship program began in 2009 to commemorate Martinez,  a Sergeant. in the United States Marine Corps.  Glen Martinez was a Monte Vista High School graduate, the son of Ron and Carol Martinez who set up the scholarship in Glen’s memory. An annual  5K Walk/Run and Veterans Golf Tournament helps to provide funds for the scholarships.

On a beautiful day on the 25th of May the Monte Vista Golf Course welcomed 47 men & women to participate in the 10th Annual Glen Martinez 5K Run/Walk.

The annual event is held to  honor and remember U.S. Marine Sgt. Glen Martinez, age 31 who was killed in action along with three other Marines when the Humvee they were riding in hit a roadside bomb in Iraq on May 2, 2008. Among the runners  were two active duty Marines back from Japan, one of which, a cousin to Glen Martinez. The pair had traveled  from Twentynine Palms, Calif. the night before the race and reached Monte Vista at 4:30 a.m. just in time to catch a few winks before competing that day.

Not only did they compete but they placed  2nd & 3rd in their age division (15-20). The  1st place Men 5K Runner Line Benton  also performed well, recording one of the fastest time to date at 18:41:45. Following are the results from the Glen Martinez 5K Memorial Run/Walk.
