Adams State University strives to encourage healthy lifestyles

ALAMOSA – In celebration of healthy individuals and the environment, Adams State University has organized a week of events, including free climbing for everyone from April 16 through April 20, at the climbing wall located in the Rex Activity Center.

The Human Performance and Physical Education Department will offer fitness testing, including Fitness Age, body composition, and Wingate Power, from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on April 16 through April 18, in the East Campus Building. Each test costs $5.

Start Monday, April 16, out right with free coffee at 8:30 a.m. near the Japanese/American Memorial Garden. Experience Acudetox from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the Rex Activity Center. Acudetox is ear acupuncture involving the placement of acupuncture needles in five points on each ear. Each of the five points in the ear corresponds to a specific point in the body. Learn or develop skills necessary to rock climb during the Gym to Crag Climbing Clinic from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Rex Activity Center.

Tuesday, April 17, events include a free paraffin dip, all day, at College Cuts, located in the Student Union Building. Paraffin wax can be applied moist to hands or feet to ease the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis. Paraffin especially helps to reduce pain and loosen up hands and finger joints before exercise. Continue participating in Wellness Week by visiting the Environmental Fair from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Porter Hall. A certified personal training will be available to answer fitness questions from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in Rex Activity Center.

Bike, walk, skateboard, ride s scooter, just don’t drive to work on Wednesday, April 18, and enjoy free pancakes from 7:45 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the ASAP Bike Shop, located on the northeast corner of the Rex Activity Center. Wednesday will also include Crestone Spiritual Center Tour from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.; kickball at 6 p.m. on the North Campus Green; and Glow Zumba at 7:30 p.m. in the Rex Activity Center.

A Kindred Spirits Lunch begins at 12 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Student Union Building dining hall. Later, get some fur love with mellow dogs during Paws and Relax at 6 p.m. in the Nielsen Library first floor. Paws and Relax is sponsored by the ASU Counseling Center, Nielsen Library, and the student club Promoting Healthy Individuals Through Empowerment (PHITE).  Studies have shown that animal assisted activities can both increase positive mood and decrease stress levels.

Prepare for the weekend with Energize Yoga at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, on the North Campus Green. Let the stresses of the school/work week go with this yoga session targeted to re-energize, while soaking up vitamin D in the Alamosa sunshine.

Support our ASU Softball team through the weekend as they take on Chadron State at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the ASU Softball Field. The Women’s Lacrosse Team will face Regis University at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the ASU Lacrosse Field. Wear green and support the Grizzlies.

Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day, bring your garden gloves and help clean the campus garden at 10 a.m., the garden is located off Murphy Drive near the Gingerbread Daycare Center.
