Adams State Upward Bound will host an informational virtual open house

ALAMOSA – The Adams State University Upward Bound has prepared students for a successful college experience for over 40 years.

Current high school students now have an opportunity to learn more about the Adams State Upward Bound program during an informational virtual open house from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, and Monday, Nov. 9.

According to Angelica Valdez, TRIO executive director, the program is currently accepting applications from interested 9th through 12th grade students from San Luis Valley counties including Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, and Saguache.

Due to the pandemic, Upward Bound will not be visiting schools in-person this fall however students will continue to receive individualized attention that has been a hallmark of the Adams State Upward Bound since it first began working with San Luis Valley students in 1972.

While in high school, Upward Bound students will have access to tutoring five days-a-week, supplemental instruction and the opportunity to participate in a summer residential program. Goals include improving high school students’ state test scores, GPA, helping fill out the FASFA, and scholarship searches. Once accepted, students have the ability to check out a variety of technology including Chrome books, hot spots, headsets, and graphic calculators.

“If it is needed for their classwork, we can help them receive the appropriate tools,” Valdez says.

Upward Bound is one of the federally funded TRIO programs, which provide outreach and student services for individuals.
