Alamosa boys blow out Ellicott in opener

ALAMOSA – Three Alamosa High School boys basketball players scored in double figures and two of them tallied more than 20 points as the Mean Moose opened the 2021-22 season with an 85-46 win over Ellicott. It was Alamosa’s first game in the Alamosa Basketball Classic Friday at the Mean Moose gym.

Alamosa got off to a hot start as it took a 30-4 lead after the first quarter. The Mean Moose increased their lead to 51-18 at halftime.

The Thunderhawks attempted to stay with the Mean Moose in the third quarter, however, Alamosa had a 71-36 advantage at the end of the period.

Alamosa outscored Ellicott 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

Damian Orozco led Alamosa in scoring with 24 points including going 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Brant Jackson was next with 21 points with 20 of them coming from the field.

Donovan Ramirez scored 10 points for the Mean Moose.

Pedro Perez led Ellicott in scoring with 14 points including four 3-point baskets. Jose Martinez added 11 points including three treys.

Alamosa (1-0) will face Northfield today. Tip-off at the AHS gym is at 2:30 p.m.

ELLICOTT GIRLS 50, ALAMOSA 25

The Alamosa girls got the season off to a rough start as they lost to Ellicott 50-25.

The Lady Thunderhawks led 10-3 after the first quarter. They increased the lead to 21-4 at halftime, and 42-19 after the third quarter. Ellicott scored eight points in the fourth quarter compared to six for Alamosa.

Miranda Geringer led the Lady Mean Moose with 13 points

Ellicott had a balanced offensive attack. Alyssa Lagasse led the Lady Thunderhawks with eight points. Three more Ellicott players scored six points.

Alamosa (0-1) will host Northfield today at 1 p.m.

NORTHFIELD BOYS 67, DEL NORTE 50

The Del Norte High School basketball teams also opened their seasons at the Alamosa Basketball Classic with the Tiger boys team falling to Northfield 67-50.

The Nighthawks got off to a big lead early and they had a 21-14 advantage after the first quarter. The Tigers, however, were able to stay within striking distance but they trailed 37-29 at halftime.

Northfield began to pull away in the third quarter and it had a 53-32 lead at the end of the period. Del Norte did outscore Northfield in the fourth quarter 18-14.

Ben Parra led Del Norte in scoring with 25 points. Tyler Gallegos was next with 12.

Justus Michael was Northfield’s top scorer with 15 points and David Samuels was next with 13. Antonio Trujillo scored 12.

Del Norte (0-1) will play Ellicott today at 11:30 a.m.

NORTHFIELD GIRLS 63, DEL NORTE 4

It was an even rougher start to the season for the Del Norte girls as they were defeated by Northfield 63-4.

The Lady Nighthawks had a 26-0 lead after the first quarter. Shelby Van Zalinge scored the Lady Tigers’ first point, but that would be their only scoring of the first half as Northfield led 34-1 at halftime. The Lady Nighthawks increased the lead to 55-1 after the third quarter..

Kaitlyn Velasquez led the Lady Tigers with three points - all of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Aliyah Herron and Nashara Oneyewuenyi both scored 13 points to lead Northfield.

Del Norte (0-1) will play Ellicott today at 10 a.m.
