Alamosa County Commissioners to sign proclamation during Wednesday’s meeting

ALAMOSA — The Alamosa County Board of County Commissioners will be meeting this Wednesday at their regularly scheduled time of 8:30am. In addition to those topics that are routinely reviewed, the commissioners will be hearing an update from the Alamosa Chamber of Commerce provided by Erin Keck. Katelyn Smith with the Adams State University Athletics Department will be presenting information related to the Grizzly Club Sponsorship. Nicole Jaramillo, Alamosa County Clerk and Recorder, will be discussing issuance of a Special Events Permit Liquor License requested by SLV Go/Gutted Event scheduled to take place in September. SLV Great Outdoors will also be discussing a Dark Sky Initiative with the commissioners.

Of special significance, the Alamosa County commissioners will also be signing a proclamation declaring September 16, 2021 as the “Welcome Home the 5th and 7th Cavalry, Battle of Ia Drang Valley, Vietnam Day”.

This battle, which took place in November of 1965 and involved forces with the US 5th and 7th cavalry, 1st and 2nd Battalions, is widely regarded as one of the fiercest battles fought during the Vietnam conflict. It is also of great significance to veterans and community members in the SLV as former Veteran Services Officer Frank Muniz was present in combat that day.  Mr. Muniz is mentioned by name in the proclamation, which will be presented during the annual reunion of those involved in the Battle of Ia Drang to be held in the San Luis Valley from September 15-19, 2021. known as one of the fiercest battles fought during the war.

As quoted in the proclamation, “The Board of Commissioners for Alamosa County officially “Welcome Home” the brave men and women who served our country during the Vietnam War.

In the afternoon, there will be a work session related to the American Rescue Plan funds received from the federal government.
