ALAMOSA — Saturday morning Alamosa (9-1-0) took on Bayfield (3-6-0) for the second league match up between the two teams. Just like the first meeting Alamosa took a 2-1 win and stayed perfect in the Intermountain League.

Both teams entered Saturday’s fray after a little tune-up. Alamosa pelted the Ignacio Wildcats in a 10-0 game that was cut short thanks to the mercy rule. Bayfield shut out Montezuma-Cortez 6-0 prior to backtracking to Alamosa for Saturday’s game.
As action got underway it was clear that it was going to be battle between two equally matched teams. Alamosa did a great job maintaining pressure and getting shots on goal in the first half, while the Wolverines minimized fast breaks and sprang into action every time Alamosa senior Katie Parkins touched the ball.

Alamosa ended the drought with under a minute to play in the half.  A feed from sophomore Taylor Motz got Parkins deep into Wolverine territory, which she knocked in to give the Moose a lead before the half.  That one goal stood tall for the next 24 minutes. The next score went to the Wolverines.

Bayfield had been looking for cracks and collected a few scoring opportunities. A fast break from Wolverine, Savannah Kaufmann resulted in a tricky shot off the outside of her foot that wound up in the far corner of the net. It took seven minutes for Alamosa to answer back.

Katy Gallegos would get the honor of a direct free kick with less than 10 minutes remaining. Gallegos threaded the difference maker under the cross bar and over the keeper’s fingers to give Alamosa a lead they would not relinquish.

The win gives Alamosa two league sweeps in the same season, a task they have not accomplished since 2015. Alamosa will go for sweep number three tonight when Pagosa Springs comes to town. The meeting between the Moose and Pirates is set to begin at 4 p.m.
