Alamosa hosts Montezuma-Cortez in interleague action

ALAMOSA— Tonight at 7 p.m. the Mean Moose (3-1) starts notching important numbers with game against league foe Montezuma-Cortez(1-2).

The host Mean Moose have gotten three wins, taking their only 2A victory over Florence in commanding fashion in a 43-0 game that ran the clock for the final 4 minutes.

Cortez got their only victory this season last week over Ignacio in a 38-6 game that the Panthers controlled all throughout.

Alamosa has continued their run-first tendencies with tailback Reis Martinez leading a potent rushing attack that’s accumulated 908 yards this season. Martinez has accounted for 448 yards of that averaging 112 a game chipping in 5 touchdowns.

Junior passer John Lujan takes snaps for Alamosa compiling 382 yards averaging 14.7 yards per completion and has tossed 3 touchdowns. Lujan typically looks to senior Angelo Ramirez for steady production. Ramirez has brought down 9 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Offensively the Panthers field a rather balanced offense but seem to have more success passing than rushing. While the Panthers gathered 369 yards on the ground compared to 305 in the air, they have gotten 5 touchdowns passing compared to just 2 rushing.

Junior Ike Dennison handles the passing duties for the Panthers going 29-54 for 10.5 yards per completion. When Dennison drops back he’s typically looking to his bread and butter, senior Vinny Conklin and junior Cole Herrmann. Conklin and Herrmann combine for all 5 of Cortez’s touchdown grabs and 257 yards.

Dennison figures to be a pocket passer having only taken off 12 times for 37 yards, the lion’s share of the carries go to Jacob Schuster. Schuster has gotten a touchdown and 208 yards with his 38 touches.

Defensively Alamosa allows 8.5 points per game and has only witnessed one offense put up double digits against them. The Moose have also tallied 2 picks and 4 sacks.

The Panthers are currently allowing 33 points per game. The Panthers pass rush have also collected 10 sacks 7 of which they added last week against Ignacio.
