ALAMOSA — A slow start would not define Alamosa’s home football game on Saturday against the Salida Spartans. The Mean Moose kept Salida winless with a 41-6 Intermountain League (IML) win.

Alamosa is still picking up the pieces after losing starting quarterback junior Kasey Jones against Bayfield (6-1) in a 28-0 loss. The Moose have found stable ground with senior Dawson Honeycutt who answered the call against Montezuma-Cortez picking up 311 yards and three touchdowns in the 39-24 road win over the Panthers (3-5).

Saturday, Honeycutt struggled initially with his first two pass attempts winding up in Spartan hands putting the Moose in a 6-0 hole early.

Alamosa rallied behind their passer.

The defense kept Salida off the board not allowing a single point after that, seniors Damian Orozco and Hayden Shawcroft picking up sacks. Sophomore RJ Meis logged the lone Alamosa takeaway with an interception.

While the offense ran away from the Spartans with 41 unanswered points. Senior rusher Dante Gonzalez Jr. rumbled for 111 yards and a touchdown. Honeycutt chipped in 51 yards and a touchdown of his own to the running game and logged 13 completions on his next 21 attempts going for 156 yards and three touchdowns. The win elevates Alamosa to 6-2. Losing members off the starting roster is never ideal but the Moose were lucky to have it happen during the most lenient portion of their schedule. Montezuma-Cortez, Salida and upcoming Lamar combine for a 4-20 record. Currently, the Moose are unranked by CHSAA Coaches Poll only garnering votes but they occupy the 9th spot in the CHSAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI) ranking system.

This weekend Alamosa will be on the road for the final week of the regular season taking on Lamar (1-7), Friday Oct. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
