Alamosa Seniors: Senior center offers new classes

This week begins the Strong Bones exercise program, conducted by Mary Ellen Fleming. This is a 12-week class that takes place on Monday, Wednesday & Friday @ 9:30 a.m. The program is designed for middle-aged and older men and women using hand and ankle weights to increase strength and bone density as well as improve balance and flexibility. There is no cost to participate in this program. Please feel free to call with any questions.

Talking Your Troubles Away is a new class offered by Jim Cone beginning on Wednesdays @ 3 p.m. Jim is retired from the Naval Reserves and has been counseling those suffering from psychological trauma for about 30 years. He has also worked with the VA helping to train new doctors entering the mental health system. The purpose of the class is to help educate participants about the many different ways to solve some of life’s most perplexing issues. This free self-help discussion class is for veterans, first responders, and anyone who believes they have suffered an emotional trauma in their lives. The discussion may also be beneficial for family members or loved ones who want to better understand why their loved one is sometimes not so loving.

Come and explore the world of dreams each Monday at 9:30 a.m. Roy Kiefer will moderate the group using the Jungian school of thought.

On Friday, June 9th from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m., join Daniel Workman, of Workman Firearms Training, for a Conceal Carry Class. Classroom portion will take place here at the center and the shooting portion at the firing range. Class is free to members of the Alamosa Senior Citizens, $20 for Seniors 50 and over and $40 for all others. Call to register or just drop in. The County Nurse will be here next Monday, June 11th @ 10:30 a.m. to check blood pressures, oxygen and to answer questions.

The following weekly activities are for all seniors whether you are a member or not.

* Billiards Play.

* Coffee social hour @ 8 a.m.

* Puzzle construction.

* Dime Bingo, M-Th from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Free to members. $2 fee for non-members.

* Dream Workshop with Roy Kiefer on Mondays @ 9:30 a.m.

* Tai Chi with Lyn Johnson is moving to Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. throughout the summer and Wednesdays @ 5:30 p.m. The Wed. class is free to members of the Alamosa Senior Citizens and $10 per class for all others.

* Free 5 point ear acupuncture conducted by Rick Wertz each Tuesday @ 9:30 a.m. for veterans and seniors 50 & over.

* Knitting/Crocheting group meets each Monday throughout the summer @ 10:30 a.m. and the Mah Jongg group @ 1 p.m.

* Linda Falkenthal is here each Friday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to help with your computer, smart phone or tablet needs. Call to sign up for a session.

* Chair Yoga - Fridays @ 10 a.m.

* Dominoes - Fridays @ 12:30 p.m.

* Daily transportation is available for seniors 60 and over between 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Please call ahead at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a ride for errands, Dr. visits, grocery shopping, dining and participating in events at the Center, etc.
