Alamosa sixth, Centauri ninth after first day of state

ALAMOSA – The Colorado High School Activities Association state wrestling tournaments got under way on Thursday at Ball Arena in Denver.

CLASS 3A

ALAMOSA

Alamosa High School is in sixth place in Class 3A with 18 points.

Six of the Mean Moose were victorious in the first round. Anthony Griego (113) won by a 5-4 decision over Dylan Paris of Eaton, Dempsey Gibbs (120) pinned Mukhtar Hashimi of Alameda in 1:39, Dario Valdez (126) won by a 6-1 decision over Carlos Munoz of Eaton, Dyson Woodward (132) pinned Joseph LeGrand of Pueblo Central in 5:46, Kyler Liddell (150) pinned Sebastian Martinez of Lutheran in 1:07, and James Sanchez (285) won by an 8-2 decision Weston Sweigart of Florence.

Other Alamosa wrestlers saw Jeremiah DeLaCerda (106) pinned by Thomas Lee of Elizabeth in 3:08, Sage Rockcastle (138) lose by an 8-0 major decision to Isaak Chavez of Mullen, and Donovan Valdez (144) was pinned by Kyle Owen of Elizabeth in 3:03.

CENTAURI

Centauri is in ninth place with 16 points.

Four of the Falcons won in the first round. Matthew Salazar (106) pinned Ayden Arellano of University in 1:54, Riley Valdez (120) pinned Gage Fisher of Lamar in 4:11, Josh Polkowske (165) pinned Brayden Betsworth of Eaton in 1:40, and Erik Mestas (175) pinned Cooper Sandqvist of Severance in 3:08.

The other two Centauri wrestlers were Aundree Chavez (113) who was pinned by Dale O’Blia of Mullen in 3:25, and Parker Buhr (138) who lost by 16-1 technical fall to Brayden Bach of Holy Family in 4:40.

CLASS 2A

MONTE VISTA

Monte Vista is in 10th place in the Class 2A team standings with 15 points.

Five of the Pirates won their first round matches. Damian Lopez (126) won by a 12-2 major decision over Bobby Kiesewetter of Golden View Classical Academy, Kevin Cisneros (132) pinned Peyton Armstrong of North Fork in an even four minutes, Jacob Pacheco (150) won by a 3-1 decision over Sabyn Hager of Hayden in sudden victory, Jeremiah Baumgardner (157) won by a 4-3 decision over Aiden Jack of Calhan, Matthew Wright (285) pinned Lincoln Tomky of Swink in 2:19.

The remaining Monte Vista wrestlers saw DeAngelo Archuleta (138) lose by 7-2 decision to Charlie Miller of North Fork, and Jaxon Martinez (175) lost by 3-1 decision to Chris Wellington of West Grand.

CENTER

Center is tied for 25th place with six points.

Only two Vikings won their first round matches. Jordan Duran (106) pinned Liam DeBoer of Discovery Canyon in 5:56, and Martin Palma (157) won by an 8-5 decision over Chase Ripley of Olathe.

Also wrestling for Center were Francisco Villa (113) who lost by 15-4 major decision to Austin Snapp of Wray, Lorenzo Trujillo (138) who was pinned by Elias Hanson of Cedaredge in one minute, Aaron Valadez (144) who lost by 6-3 decision to Wylee Lorimor of Cedaredge, Jesus Valadez (165) who lost by 7-2 decision to Grant Statz of Sedgwick County/Fleming, and Devin Thompson (175) who was pinned by Cole Dainty-Guilgoyl of Mancos in 1:33.

SARGENT

Sargent is tied for 31st place with three points.

The Farmers saw Trenton Lovelace (215) score an 11-3 major decision over Malachi Deck of North Fork, and Garett Thompson (144) was pinned by Abe Maupin of Meeker in 4:40.

DEL NORTE

Both of Del Norte’s wrestlers were defeated in the first round.

Paul Neal (144) was pinned by Samuel Meisner of Wray in 18 seconds, and Wyatte McLehaney (190) was pinned by Pepper Rusher of Wiggins in 1:03.

SIERRA GRANDE/CENTENNIAL

The only representative for Sierra Grande/Centennial was defeated in the first round as Reyin Goudace (285) was pinned by Laith Ibrahim of Wiggins in 1:02.

GIRLS

The only SLV girl wrestler to compete in this year’s state tournament, Alamosa’s Sarah DeLaCerda won her first round match as she pinned Aliyah Engle of Sedgwick County/Fleming in 1:27.
