MOSCA, Colo. — Thursday night Sangre de Cristo volleyball (4-2-0) played host to Alamosa (8-0-0). The visiting Moose did what needed to be done playing down two classes, taking a 3-0 win back to Alamosa.

Sangre de Cristo boasts a talented roster and regularly plays up a class or two with games against Centauri and Monte Vista usually popping up. But one would have to go back to 2013 to see the last meeting between these two squads, a 3-0 affair in Sangre’s favor. The two teams rarely see one another as Alamosa plays in the 3A Intermountain league while Sangre de Cristo now resides in the 1A class and has been splitting competition in the 1A/2A Southern Peaks league.

When the action got underway on Thursday, Alamosa’s offense showcased a mean streak with Taylor Motz and Terese Chavez loosing anti-personnel ordinance from the net. After the visitors opened up a 5-1 lead, Sangre sophomore Kylee Christensen electrified the gym with a huge block to force a side-out. The T-Birds would then ride that momentum to a 4-point run to close the gap at 5 apiece in the set.

Despite rarely seeing one another, both rowdy crowds stayed rocking as though there was a long standing rivalry. Alamosa’s girls were relentless, and they would continue to lead the way by keeping Sangre de Cristo to points off side-outs. Alamosa’s Caton logged a kill to close the first set at 25-18 in Alamosa’s favor.

Alamosa took immediate control of the second set as well with a 4 point run. And once again a big block from Sangre’s Christensen sparked the T-birds to close the gap. The Moose would resume control of the action until late in the set leading 18-13. Sangre de Cristo turned the tables and kept Alamosa to side-out points on four straight serves closing the gap to a 22-19 game.

After getting their final push to the match point once again it was Caton for Alamosa with the kill to close things out, she would tally 6 kills before the night was through.

The third and final set the Moose took no prisoners. Things were flowing so smoothly for Alamosa that even a let serve from Emma Gilmore dropped on Thunderbird court en route to the Moose picking up 7 points on the rally. The final set closed at 25-13 giving the Moose their third set of the night to take the match. Alamosa junior Taylor Motz was firing brutal shots all night and led the Moose with 8 kills. Following Motz were Chavez with 7 and Jordan Mobbley with 6. Emily DePriest took the team lead in assisted blocks with 4 followed by Emma Gilmore with 3.

Sangre de Cristo will be right back at it when they host Centennial Friday night at 6 p.m. Alamosa gets back to action on Saturday playing their second league game when they host Montezuma-Cortez.
