ALAMOSA — Taking AHS Field for the final time of 2018 Alamosa soccer was determined to defend home field and to keep all their streaks alive. The Moose were successful, taking down visitor Montezuma-Cortez by a score of 3-0.

Alamosa (11-1-0) has had a nice little home stand this past week. Starting with Ignacio last Thursday, Alamosa has played four straight games within the cozy surroundings at AHS Field. And to reward the home crowd the Moose won all four,  three by shut-out.

When things got under way on Friday Alamosa controlled the pace keeping the ball on the attack which is something they’ve been able to do with little difficulty all month long. The defensive backfield was incredibly adept at snuffing out any penetration, and keeping the attackers well fed.

Right before the break it was Katie Parkins who broke the tie with a late goal to give Alamosa their first lead of the game. Alamosa carried that lead into the half. As with coach Cheyenne Sinn’s boys in the fall, the girls also seemed to catch a second wind in the later half.

Midway into the second a corner kick from Alana Hackett was sent into the net by Parkins to give the Moose a 2-0 lead. The final goal came two minutes later on a pass that went back to Katy Gallegos. Gallegos typically looks for soft spots around 30-40 yards out firing off sniping opportunities. Gallegos got the ball airborne from 40 yards out and rolled it off the top of Cortez’s keeper Elena Cosner’s fingers to make it a 3-0 game.

Cosner struggled to control her saves, causing some rather controversial rebounds that drew the ire of the home crowd. One shot dropped and began to roll inside as Cosner regained control; the official ruled it had not completely crossed the line. Another snuck in over the top of her and bounced at the goal line before she pounced on it. While the rulings were questioned, Alamosa need not worry about ‘what could have been’, as they had done enough to keep the officials from having to decide the game.

Alamosa has long since won their region but this win completes their perfect sweep of their regional teams. Having the best league record makes Alamosa an automatic qualifier for the 3A State tournament. The Moose aren’t out of the woods yet however, as they will be attempting to better their seeding position from here on out.

Alamosa will be going down a class from here on out. The remainder of Alamosa's opponents all reside in 2A, the first of which will be a road meeting with Center on May 1 at 6:30 p.m.
