Alamosa to host Trinidad for Homecoming

ALAMOSA— In their homecoming game this Friday Alamosa (2-1) will host the Trinidad Miners (1-2).
Unranked Trinidad has been boom or bust in their last three, losing their first two by a combined score of 88-0 and winning their home opener against John Mall last week by a score of 21-0. Alamosa has outscored opponents 93-20 in their last three outings and are 2-1 having dropped their first game of the year to 3rd ranked La Junta.

When these teams met each other last year it was a lopsided affair with Alamosa walking away with a 48-7 victory. The Mean Moose ran wild for six touchdowns on the ground. Ben Wuckert and Angelo Ramirez combined for 213 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. It was a clean game where neither team turned the ball over, and Alamosa didn’t punt away any of their drives, Reis Martinez even took a kick return to the house.

This year Trinidad’s main weapon is senior Josiah Portenier. Behind center Portenier is 23 of 51 completing just above 45 percent of his passes. When Portenier pulls it down he has taken defenses for a team leading 169 yards and a touchdown, gashing John Mall for his long of 60 yards. Lining up behind him Trinidad has fellow senior Ray Garcia.

With the passing game struggling as it has Garcia has probably seen more than his fair share of 8 man fronts leaving him to grind his way to 133 yards with a 4 yard per carry average off 23 touches and finding the end zone for the first time last week.
Alamosa Passer John Lujan added another 123 yards and a touchdown last week to his season totals completing exactly half of his attempts. The Tigers also kept Reis Martinez and Angelo Ramirez mostly quiet as they combined for 57 yards and a touchdown; it was Martinez’s first game below the century mark.

The Miners' main receiving threat is senior Ray Garcia who has gone for 58 yards on his 6 receptions. Alamosa’s receivers made the most of their touches with Chad Jackson overachieving for 43 yards on 2 catches and Angelo Ramirez taking his 3 for 35 and a touchdown.

The Alamosa defense has gotten 4 sacks, 3 of which are credited to jack of all trades Angelo Ramirez. Their pass rushers will be charged with containment on Portenier. Action kicks off this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Alamosa High School.
