Alamosa wrestling rides wave of quarterfinal wins into final day; Moose has a commanding lead in 3A

DENVER – Seven Valley boys continue their march towards state championship glory. Of all the wrestlers that traveled to the heart of downtown Denver with hopes of a parade of champions only the few remain. Alamosa houses four of them, and with their team lead it’s of little surprise that Alamosa’s wrestling team is carrying the majority of young men vying for the top of the podium.

Alamosa 3A

106- Davion Chavez (35-8) vs. Alberto Felthager (36-5)

Davion Chavez got the Valley teams started right when he faced Dalton Williams. Chavez opened up quickly working reversals and takedowns before he would collect a fall at 3:32. To take home a championship Chavez will need to defeat Alberto Felthager of Trinidad. Felthager was formerly ranked second overall and knocked off Santana Hernandez in his first match on his path to the finals.

126- Joe Chavez (41-6) vs. Caleb Cox (38-7)

Alamosa’s Joe Chavez has been on a warpath and wrestlers have resisted him at their own peril. Since entering state as the consensus favorite at 126 pounds Chavez has done nothing but earn it every step of the way. Chavez has made his way with a 10-5 decision and two technical falls, the last coming by a 16-0 score. Chavez’s opponent will be Caleb Cox of Brush, formerly ranked number two in 3A wresting behind only Chavez.

152- Reis Martinez (5-1) vs. Wyatt Pfau (44-4)

Reis Martinez has been something of a wildcard this season. After taking a knee injury during the football season little was known if he would make it back in time for wrestling. Then in regionals with a brace around the knee in question not only did Martinez compete, he won. Taking two wins and having qualified for state Martinez conceded the championship match with his eyes on something greater. At state the Alamosa senior’s knee still ails him and the 152-weight class has been packed with talent but that hasn’t deterred Martinez in the least.

With two wins Martinez awaits his meeting with Pfau tonight. Pfau has been no slouch, Pfau was formerly of the 160 weight class and has been making some noise of his own. Pfau dispatched Centauri’s Brian Shawcroft as well as besmirching Jaziah Whaley’s record with loss number one for Whaley. In the final seconds of Pfau and Whaley’s match Pfau twisted his ankle. Time will tell if it’s serious or if both wrestlers will be competing with ailments.

285- Preston Duran (29-7) vs. Logan Church (34-0)

Last week in the Alamosa High School gym the Moose were hosting the regional tournament for state placement. Of the schools attending were Delta and their heavyweight Logan Church. Church kept his record perfect by defeating Preston Duran to take the regional title. Now day three of the state tournament and Duran has done it; he has collected three straight pins in his last three matches and is primed and ready to take on Church in a rematch with everything on the line.

Centauri 3A

145- Brandon Buhr (49-3) vs. Brandon Damian (36-2)

The number one wrestler in the 145-weight class from Centauri, Buhr has taken some rather decided matches. The Centauri senior collected a 19-3 technical fall in his first match, a 25-second pin in his second before facing Tate Hinger. Buhr would defeat Hinger via a 10-6 to advance to the finals. Now the only thing standing between Buhr and a title is Brandon Damian, the second ranked wrestler at 145 pounds.

Sanford 2A

106- Max Salazar (30-4) vs. Seth McFall (32-5)

Sanford’s Max Salazar had the pleasure of taking the number one spot during the regional championship. He also had the pleasure of taking it at the home location in Sanford. Salazar enjoyed all this at the expense of Fowler’s Seth McFall. Now the two will meet again this time under the bright lights of the Pepsi Center.

Del Norte 2A

132- Brett Benevides (37-8) vs. Wesley VanMatre (24-3)

As a showcase of how talented in the sport of wrestling our region is Brett Benevides is the third boy on our list to have earned a rematch at state against a regional foe. Benevides took a 10-0 major decision over Gianni Trejo to pace his way to the final match. The Del Norte senior will be trying to avoid a repeat at regionals where VanMatre defeated him in a 6-1 decision when the two face off again tonight.
