Amos Alan Bernal, 79

Lifelong San Luis resident Amos Arthur Bernal, 79, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2017 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, with his loving family by his side. Amos was welcomed into the world on September 3, 1937 in San Luis; the beloved son of Ruben Bernal and Estella Valdez Bernal. Amos was a well known and active member of the community. After attaining his Master's Degree he worked as a teacher for over 30 years for the Centennial School District. He was a Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Knight with Council 2620 of San Luis. He received the SLV Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, he was named in the Who's Who Among Teachers, and received an award from Hilios Culturales. He was instrumental in the Senior Citizen Organization, the San Luis Museum, the Stations of the Cross Shrine, Los Caminos Antiguos as well as many other organizations. Amos was recently inducted into the Adams State University Educator Hall of Fame. Though recognized for many outstanding achievements, Amos' passion and joy in life was being able to spend time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He gained a strong following because of his strong passion for wanting students to learn and because of the endless amount of energy that he provided and time, effort and patience on behalf of his many students. He cared greatly about the future of each one of his students and took extra time to teach life lessons.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Bernal of San Luis, CO; daughters, Sharon (Paul) Maestas of Phoenix, AZ; Annette (Antonio) Sisneros of Alamosa, CO; sons, Alan (Lydia) Bernal of Dallas, TX; Arthur (Karen) Bernal of Pueblo, CO; grandchildren, David Maestas, Nicole Maestas, Matthew Bernal, Savannah Bernal, Sheyanne Bernal, Brendon Bernal, Ava Sisneros, Adrian Sisneros, and one brother Ruben (Nancy) Bernal of Pueblo, CO. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents Ruben and Estella Bernal, infant daughter Patricia Bernal, and infant brother Richard Bernal.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 7:00 PM at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Centennial High School Gymnasium. Viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-5 PM at the Romero Funeral Chapel in San Luis. Interment will follow at the Sangre De Cristo Cemetery. The care of arrangements have been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of San Luis.
