ASU Civic Engagement Office will host Place Based Service-Learning

ALAMOSA – The Adams State University Office of Civic Engagement and Career Services will host an Institute for Place Based Service-Learning from February 25 through March 2 and welcomes the public to attend this free event.

Joe Brooks, international expert on PBS-L, will facilitate several events around this topic. Experiential learning contributes to student belonging, sense of purpose, and success by connecting them in meaningful ways to the amazing and unique extended classroom that is the San Luis Valley. Reciprocal community partner relationships are the foundation of Place Based Service-Learning.

Brooks, founder and director of Community Works Institute, has taught all levels of K-16, and is a seasoned leader and advocate for PBS-L. He is an experienced workshop leader, facilitator, and keynote speaker who believes that the path to education and a meaningful life lies in deep community engagement and intentionally building students’ sense of self-efficacy. He advocates for an educational focus that develops a sense of place and empathy, with the creation of sustainable communities as the ultimate goal. His work with educators is based on principles of democratic teaching and social justice intent on creating consistent opportunities for students to apply content and skills in meaningful service to the community.
