ASU Counselor Education student receives scholarship

ALAMOSA – Adams State University Counseling Education graduate student Kami Elorrieta recently received a $5,000 scholarship from the SR Education Group, a leading education research publisher. The company’s quarterly scholarship program, implemented this year, follows their mission of making college more affordable and attainable for every student.

“Receiving this scholarship fills me with relief and gratitude,” Elorrieta said. “Organizations such as SR Education Group provide such a wonderful opportunity to further my education and pursue a career I am passionate about without worrying quite so much how I will be able afford such a fulfilling experience.”

Elorrieta is pursuing her master’s in counseling with a dual specialty in school counseling and clinical mental health. She believes this degree will give her the opportunity to help children cope with and overcome their traumas. Through her graduate program, Kami is learning how to be an effective counselor so she can dedicate her time to building relationships with children, parents, schools, social workers, and involved law enforcement.

Following her passion to serve others, after Elorrieta earned her bachelor’s degree, she entered a rewarding long-term volunteer experience that was influential to her current career path in counseling. After overcoming many hardships, Elorrieta said she is excited to be able to further her education without the financial burden.

The SR Education Group awarded 12 students $60,000 in scholarships this quarter. According to the SR Education Group, out of 1,041 compelling applications, these students provided the most persuasive responses about their academic goals, professional goals, and financial circumstances.

SR Education Group awards scholarships on a quarterly basis throughout the year. Applications are currently being accepted for the next round of all four scholarships and selections will be finalized after the September 29 deadline. The application consists of two short questions about applicant’s education and future career goals, as well as any circumstances that affect the individual’s need for financial assistance.
