ASU hosts Olympic Marathon Trial 50th Reunion reception
The Honorable Carlos Lucero presents Dr. Joe I. Vigil with an original tshirt from the 1968 Olympic Marathon Trials. Alamosa played host to many U.S. Olympic athletes preparing for the 1968 Olympics that were to be held in Mexico City, Mexico. Alamosa was the destination of choice because of similar climate and the exact same altitude as Mexico City.
Coach Damon Martin greets bronze medalist Deena Kastor at the Olympic Marathon Trial 50th Reunion. U.S. distance running greats such as Frank Shorter, Billy Mills, Amby Burfoot, Bill Clark and Hal Higdon were also in attendance.
George Young finished first during the 1968 Olympic Marathon Trials, where he won a bronze medal in the Mexico City 3,000-meter steeplechase, and placed 16th (2:31:15) in the marathon.
