ASU Theatre opens The 39 Steps and The Most Massive Woman

The Most Massive Woman Wins opens February 13 on the Adams State Theatre Building Xperimental Stage.

ALAMOSA – Take 39 massive steps to the Theatre Building and experience plays directed by senior theatre students. The Adams State University Theatre Department presents The 39 Steps: A Live Radio Play, directed by Anakay Hanold and The Most Massive Women Wins, directed by Jennifer Perez. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Xperimental Theatre and continue nightly through Feb. 16.

As senior theatre students, both women were given a chance to direct plays of their choosing. Perez chose The Most Massive Women Wins, written by Madeline George, because the play is relevant to important topics in today’s society. “The play focuses primarily on body image and how, unlike society’s ideal vision of beauty, all body types are beautiful,” Perez said.

Hanold appreciated The 39 Steps, written by Joe Landry, for its “ode to Hitchcock films. It provided the actors a chance to play challenging and unique characters.”

Directing the play, Perez liked working with fellow students. “I was able to further connect with all the students and collaborate on how to best present the play, and they respected my final decisions.”

For Hanold, directing was an amazing opportunity that provided her a chance to be in charge of the whole production. “Having the actors ask about my vision and having their help make that vision a reality was an unreal feeling.”

The one-acts are set in different time periods and have completely different sets. Both directors said this is an interesting aspect and creates more opportunities for all the actors’ involvement.

Graduating this spring, Perez and Hanold will continue their theatre careers after college. Harold will remain in Colorado a couple of years and build her resume. “I eventually want to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in film and comedy.”

Perez plans to move to Chicago and become involved with comedy through Second City. “The wonder Adams State theatre faculty always encouraged and supported us throughout our college career in all aspects of theatre.”
