Longtime Manassa resident Bertha Elvira Sanchez Ortiz, 92, died October 28, 2021 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.
Bertha’s life began on January 5, 1929 in La Isla, Colorado, the proud daughter of Esquipula Sanchez and Lupita Valdez Sanchez. She married the love of her life Francisco “Frank” Anselmo Ortiz on September 1, 1949 in Conejos, Colorado. They enjoyed 55 years together until his death in 2004.
Bertha worked as a Teacher in Head Start and was a homemaker. She was a very religious and prayerful person. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima League of La Isla, CO., Legion of Mary and the Miraculous Medal Association. Her family were her pride and joy and she loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren equally. She was an amazing woman, at her age she continued to bake her favorite desserts, cook small meals for herself, loved to sew, to touch up her santitos (Saints) when they were in need of repair; enjoyed making rosaries, reading religious books and liked to dress up in her favorite outfits. She took care of her house plants. Her creative talent was displayed in her projects throughout her home.
Her children knew not to make a visit at 3 pm., and at 7:30 pm., because that was her time to pray her Divine Mercy at 3 and at 7:30 pm., the Holy Rosary with Mother Angelica on EWTN. All who knew Bertha will always remember how humble she was and her great love for others, generous heart and always giving to others.
Bertha is survived by her children: Mercy Ann Gallegos of Albuquerque, N.M., Carlos (Charlene) Ortiz of Alamosa, CO, Linda (Rudy) Sisneros of Denver, CO, Loretta (Rodney) Sandoval of Manassa, CO, Mary Jane (Alex) Atencio of Manassa, CO, Helen (Ernest) Abeyta of Manassa, CO, Christina Gonzales of Denver, CO, Lisa (Jeff Lucero) Ortiz of Manassa and Joe (Antoinette) Ortiz of Manassa, CO;
