MONTE VISTA — The Farmers were home for a pair of games against league rival South Park. Sargent would take the first contest handily 13-6, South Park would jump put early and take the second game 7-5.

Prior to the weekend Sargent’s (3-3) only losses came at the hands of a higher-class opponent. The Pagosa Springs Pirates (5-5) previously accounted for both of Sargent’s losses.

In the first inning of game one South Park would get on the board when Bobby Wallace was walked on base and got himself home. Sargent answered in the bottom of the inning, Braxton Asbell got home on a wild pitch and Payton Brown scored Jacob Deacon to give the Farmers the lead 2-1. Solid pitching in the second inning sat down all three Burro batters putting the Farmers back to work.

A lead off single from Trevor Paskett followed by a walk of Blaine Behil set the table with two runners just waiting to be batted in.  Asbell would get a single and score both his teammates before getting home on an error later in the inning to put the home team ahead 5-1.

A quiet third inning for South Park would send Sargent back to bat. Sargent’s Frank Torrez answered for the Farmers getting a base on balls and getting home on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-1. Tagging up on a fly ball South Park’s TJ Peter would add one for the Burros at the top of the fourth.

Sargent broke loose in response with five runners getting home- scores by Eddy Gonzalez, Braxton Asbell, Jacob Deacon, Payton Brown and Frank Torrez gave the Farmers an 11-2 advantage. After a quiet fifth inning action picked back up in the sixth with South Park scoring four more runners to apply pressure to the home team.

Pitching didn’t help the Burros late as walking Caleb Hsu and Paskett would lead to the Farmers extending the lead further. A solid top of the seventh left a runner stranded for South Park and handed the Farmers a 13-6 win in six and a half innings.

Game two was slanted to the Burros. A base clearing single from South Park’s Daigon Springer scored teammates Bobby Wallace and Michael Wishowski to give the visitors a 2-0 early lead. Sargent couldn’t get on the board with two strikeouts stranding loaded bases.

South Park added to their lead in the second inning with TJ Peter scoring John O’Donnell on a double to left field.

The bottom of the second inning is where Sargent would get down to business. Trevor Paskett doubled to center field and took advantage of a Burro error to advance to third base. An Eddy Gonzalez double to left field scored Paskett and put Gonzalez in prime position. Asbell scored Gonzalez with a double to center field before getting home himself on a Jacob Deacon single to tie the game at three runs each.

Neither team would break the tie until the fourth inning.  South Park’s Wishowski would be walked and take advantage of errors to break the tie. Later in the order Collin Moore batted in Springer putting the Burros ahead 5-3.

The Farmers gave themselves a chance at the top of the fifth, walking Peter to load the bases and pulling a double play. Sargent would then get two of their own at the bottom of the inning with Jacob Deacon and Peyton Brown getting home on wild pitches to even the score.

The final two innings were crippling for the Farmers as they were shut out down the stretch. South Park would add two more in the final innings to even the weekend series at a game apiece.

Sargent will continue their district tour on Saturday the 13th with a home double header against league rival Del Norte (0-7). Action is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
