Carol Jean (Jones) Sveum

January 24, 1949 – May 28, 2024

Carol Jean (Jones) Sveum, 75, died peacefully on May 28, 2024 after a 2.5-year residency in Evergreen Nursing Home. Carol was born Jan. 24, 1949 in Lubbock, Texas, to George Winston and Cynthia (Curtis) Jones. Carol married Larry Sveum on June 8, 1974, and she had two sons, Niels Erik and Lany Wade.

Carol graduated from Texas Tech University with a BA in Journalism and an MA in Mass Communications.  Carol taught English and Journalism at several high schools including Childress, Texas, Sweetwater, Texas, Amarillo, Texas, New Orleans, La., and Las Vegas, N.M.  She worked for several years at New Mexico Highlands University as an adjunct faculty in the Humanities Department and as the Assistant Director of Information Services.

Carol developed a strong interest in photography and pottery and spent several years studying the techniques involved with each.  She also produced a number of unique pots and many black and white photographs.  Carol’s passion for photography, led her to working for the Las Vegas Daily Optic. She also enjoyed working on craft projects with her sisters, sisters-in-law, and church members.

While a resident in Evergreen, Carol developed deep friendships with the nurses, CNAs, the activity staff, and other staff members.  While at Evergreen, she particularly enjoyed working on crafts for Christmas ornaments or table center pieces and playing Bingo.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, George and Alan Jones, and Ellen Keele.

Carol is survived by her husband Larry, her sons, Niels and Lany, her sister, Claudia (Dick) Thornton, and brother, Claude (Kay) Jones, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Carol and her families wishes, a memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.
