ALAMOSA — On Thursday evening Center’s Vikings (0-3) will host Del Norte (1-2) in both teams’ first league game.
Last year Center collected two wins, both coming in interdivisional games against Ignacio. Of the eight goals the Vikings scored all season 6 of them came against Ignacio’s Bobcats. Center relied on then senior Aaliyah Porres as their primary goal scorer. Porres tied for the team lead in scoring with Lainie Dillon each tallying two goals on the season.
With Porres having graduated and Dillon not showing on the roster the Vikings will be looking for a new leading scorer. The only holdover from last year that has gotten one past the goalie is senior Gladys Hernandez. This year Center has started their season with a baptism by fire facing three teams that now hold a combined record of 8-2-1. The latest in the string of three, Telluride is ranked fourth in 2A girls’ soccer according to CHSAAnow.
Sporting that difficult record Center has opened the season with three losses and are still looking for their first goal.
For the 2017 season Del Norte narrowly missed a winning record losing the first of a two game series to close the season against Buena Vista. For the 2017 season Del Norte was led offensively by Kendra Parra. Parra was responsible for 11 of the Tigers’ 19 goals taking just under two shots per game.
On the defensive side of the field Del Norte had then senior Bailey Jones as a goaltender. In net Jones saved 84 percent of shots. This year Del Norte have started their season with a balanced diet of tougher and weaker teams all three combining for a record of 6-5.
With among those teams Del Norte has gotten their first win of the season, over Woodland Park (1-3). As it stands right now the Tiger’s leading scorer is Freshman Chloe McComas with two goals, both of which coming against Woodland Park. Thus far McComas has banked both her goals in five attempts. The goalie duties in Del Norte are being handled by Lacie Jones who has collected 21 saves.
