Alamosa City Councilman Michel Carson, second from right, presents the Constitution Week proclamation on behalf of the City of Alamosa to members of the Alamosa Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, front from left, Treasurer and Past Regent Beth Benner, Chaplain and Past Regent Hazel Petty and Regent Janet Yohn. Behind them from left are Alamosa City Councilors Charles Griego, Liz Hensley, David Broyles, Jan Vigil and far right Mayor Ty Coleman. Celebrated September 17-23, Constitution Week honors the U.S. Constitution and encourages citizens to reaffirm its ideals. Constitution Week has been celebrated nationally since 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a resolution to observe Constitution Week. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest and shortest constitution of written constitutions. Regent Yohn thanked the city council for proclaiming Constitution Week and said members of Daughters of the American Revolution, who have traced their ancestry to the revolution, are proud of America and believe in the Constitution. Councilman Broyles added that upholding the Constitution will keep this country free and prosperous. Councilman Vigil said he was happy to report that the Constitution is still being taught in San Luis Valley schools, such as Center school where he is an educator.
