Clarifying letter on shooting incident

ALAMOSA — A letter to the editor published in Thursday’s Valley Courier was not totally factual.

An incident involving a party shooting a gun near a residence was true, but it did not occur in the Alamosa city limits.

Alamosa County Sheriff Robert Jackson confirmed that a man was cited with reckless endangerment, a Class 3 misdemeanor, following the Sept. 10 incident at 14301 Estrella Road south of town. The individual admitted shooting into the ground towards dogs that were harassing his mother’s chickens.

Jackson said a misdemeanor does not require the confiscation of weapons, but a court judge could still do so.

Concerning the response time, the sheriff said he was having dispatch records investigated.

“We apologize for the inaccurate information in Wednesday’s letter,” said Courier Publisher Keith R. Cerny. “We try to verify information in letters but that one slipped through the cracks.”
