ALAMOSA – With the help of several community organizations, Alamosa School District provided computers to 100 selected students who qualified through an application process.  The computers were distributed to the selected student families on Friday, May 11th at the AES 3-5 campus.

Several civic-minded groups collaborated to organize and sponsor this event including: Energy Resource Center, The Anschutz Family Foundation, PCs for People, the Alamosa School District, WSB Computer Services and Century Link. The intent is to help bridge the ‘Digital Divide” that exists between families that have access to connected computers and those who don’t.

Charlie Sanchez, former ASD school board member and ERC director for SLV, started the conversation with PCs for People, and as a result 100 ASD families were provided with the tools needed to succeed in school and future careers.

PCs for People, a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher, distributed the computers.  PCs for People is a nonprofit social enterprise focused on bridging the digital divide by providing affordable computers and Internet connectivity to low-income families and students.

The Anschutz Family Foundation generously provided a grant to PC’s for People to support its work and make this event possible. The foundation supports rural and urban Colorado nonprofit organizations that assist people to help themselves while nurturing and preserving their self-respect.

Century Link, a leading provider of Internet, is partnering with the Alamosa School District to make services accessible and affordable. Rob Nelson, area supervisor, is helping to coordinate those efforts.
