Collision sends car into building

Damage to the building was estimated at $40,000 by the Alamosa Police Department.

ALAMOSA — Two people were injured and one ticketed for careless driving causing bodily injury and suspicion of driving under the influence after a collision at the intersection of State Avenue and Fourth Street sent one of the vehicles careening into the Colorado Work Force Center building at that corner about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to an Alamosa Police Department accident report, Nakia Pettis, 22, of Alamosa, was westbound on Fourth Street and failed to yield to a red light colliding with a southbound vehicle driven by Alexander Urrutia, 23, of Jupiter, Fla. on State Avenue. Pettis’ Chevrolet Tahoe knocked Urrutia’s Honda Civic into the nearby building, causing an estimated $40,000 in damage.

Urrutia was transported by EMS to San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center for undisclosed injuries while Pettis was transported by private vehicle. Three passengers in the Pettis vehicle reportedly left the scene. Both vehicles sustained serious damage.
