LA JARA – On November 15, Rotary Club members delivered Scholastic hard cover dictionaries to third grade students in Conejos and Costilla County. Rotarians walk into the classroom and explain that it is a personal gift from the Rotary club to the youngsters and that it is theirs to keep and take home.

For many students this is the first time they have ever heard of the Conejos County Rotary Club and what Rotarians do and why focusing on “service to others” is important. Rotarians enjoy watching the students open their dictionaries with excitement and taking a look at the pictures and words firsthand.

“Many times we hear that dictionaries are a thing of the past. However, we believe that a dictionary provides benefits a computer cannot. And dictionaries are portable and can be used anywhere and it encourages exploration,” said Julie Gomez-Nuanes, club member.

One of the commitments of the Rotary Club is to help children succeed in education and delivering the resources and encouragement to become strong readers. Special thanks to Bob Rael and the Costilla County Economic Development Corporation for their contribution to the dictionaries for Costilla County students.
