SAN LUIS, CO – The Costilla County Fire Protection District (CCFPD) today announced it has taken possession of a second new tactical tender apparatus, Tender 24, that CCFPD purchased in 2020 thanks in part to a $125,000 grant from the Trinchera Blanca Foundation. CCFPD received additional funds from a matching grant provided by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to purchase Tender 13 in 2018.

Tender apparatus vehicles are utilized by rural fire departments with significant forests or grasslands primarily to deliver large amounts of water to front-line firefighting efforts. Both Tenders are Kenworth T-370 all-wheel drive with 3000-gallon capacity, Darley 1000 GPM pump, and fully equipped for wildland and structure fire support capabilities. Prior to taking possession of the Tenders, all CCFPD volunteer firefighters received simulated emergency responder driver training from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.

Tender 24 will be housed at Station 2 in Fort Garland and Tender 13 will be housed at Station 1 in San Luis. The two new tenders will greatly increase and support Costilla County’s firefighting capabilities locally, throughout other parts of Colorado, and the western United States.

“It is critical that our first responders are properly equipped to reach and combat fire as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Louis Bacon, founder of the Trinchera Blanca Foundation. “The addition of two new tactical tender apparatuses will expand and enhance the CCFPD’s capabilities. We’re proud to support the brave and dedicated members of the CCFPD who protect the broader Costilla County community each and every day.”

“We greatly appreciate the donation from the Trinchera Blanca Foundation and look forward to using these new tenders for years to come,” said Chief Theldon Smith. “These trucks will allow us to not only speed up our responsiveness within the community, but we can now also help out others across the country.”
