Courier reaps five first-place honors

This Valley Courier photo by publisher Keith Cerny took top honors for feature photographs during the 2019 Colorado Press Association Convention this past weekend in Denver. Cail Nelson of Durango was photographed during the annual Creede pond hockey tournament in January 2018. He is the son of Creede native Coleman and Sarah Nelson.

DENVER– Five first place awards were presented to the Valley Courier during the annual Colorado Press Association convention held here over the weekend. The Courier competes in Class 6 of daily newspapers across the state.

Among the honors was a feature photograph by Courier publisher Keith Cerny titled “Bundled for bluster,” featuring a 16-month-old boy at the 2018 Creede pond hockey tournament.

Cerny also received a first-place award for best photo essay featuring the Spring Fire. He, former editor Ruth Heide and Sylvia Lobato also received top honors in “best editorial special section for “Remembering the Spring Fire,” a recap edition of Courier front pages during the fire.

Cerny, Heide and Jefferson Geiger won first place for “best breaking news/deadline reporting” for last spring’s multiple fires in the Alamosa area.

Heide’s column “Still Waters” top honors in the best serious column writing.

Sister company Valley Publishing took seven first place awards and one second place for news and advertising entries for the Monte Vista Journal, Conejos County Citizen and Center Post-Dispatch.
