Creede Cabin Fever Daze is this weekend

CREEDE — February 16th and 17th marks the sixth annual revival of Creede Cabin Fever Daze. This year’s events include gallery openings, live entertainment, kids activities, and more! Enjoy the fresh mountain air and majestic views of the San Juans while walking the streets of Creede. Take a break from shopping and explore the backcountry of Rio Grande National Forest along the groomed trails of Creede on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or snowmobiles. Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or a meal in one of Creede’s delicious restaurants.

Jessica Jackson, artistic director of the Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) said, “One of the strengths of this town is that we have so many [talented] artists and [amazing] arts organizations in the same place that we have incredible recreational opportunities. [Another] strength of the town of Creede is that we are so eccentric. We’re a very strange town and this is a very eccentric festival.”

Arrive in Creede by 10 and be sure to stop in the Quiller Gallery, which will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 10-4.

Head on down the street to the Ruth for the one o’clock debut showing of “The Kid Show!” a documentary by Allison Quiller. This film will provide viewers with a behind the scenes peak at how The Kid Show is produced.

The day continues with artists’ demos at the C.Waters gallery. Watch San Luis Valley artists Kris Gosar, Colleen DeSanto, David Montgomery, and Peggy Stenmark demonstrate their painting techniques while painting their version of a cabin.

The Creede Parks and Recreation department will be hosting kids activities, including the bounce house from 3-6 p.m. at the “Old Gym.”

In need of a good laugh? Be sure to catch one of two (or both) showings of Boomtown!, CRT’s Improve Troupe. Each show is always unique and will have you in stitches. Baxter, Goss, and Speaks take the stage of Kip’s Grill early Saturday evening and the Tommyknocker Tavern will have music later in the evening.

The weekend concludes with a Free Lecture and Film Series at the Ruth. Geologist Rhonda Foal will be talking about the Colorado Plateau and how plate tectonics impacts nine national parks, including the Grand Canyon. Allison Quiller has worked with the Creede High School in assisting the students in the production of “The Mines”. This short film tells the story of three girls who embark on a hunt for extraterrestrial life and discover much more than they bargained for.

Listen to world-famous artist Steven Quiller give a presentation on composition; things to think about when painting and arranging shapes on the picture plane.

A talk on the upcoming CRT season will be given by Jackson and Executive Director, John D’Antonio. The audience will also receive insider information about what goes on behind the scenes, such as casting and design, to make a successful live theatre production. Participants will have the option to buy a lunch catered by Arps ahead of the talks or they are encouraged to patronize one of Creede’s many restaurants ahead of the talks.

“One of the things that I think is so great about this Cabin Fever Daze is that even though this is a really tiny town, this town has so much to offer and this event really give you a sampler of all of the incredible things this town has to offer,” said Allie Quiller, filmmaker and documentarian.

This year’s Cabin Fever Daze is a collaborative effort of the Creede Community Foundation, Quiller Gallery, CRT, and the Creede/Mineral Chamber of Commerce. For more information about Creede Cabin Fever Daze visit www.creede.com.
