Cuevas faces preliminary hearing

PUEBLO– A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 3 for the Monte Vista man suspected of killing his mother and dismembering her body according to the Pueblo Chieftain.

In Friday’s edition, the Chieftain said Anthony Cuevas, 36, is set to be in court for the hearing in early January with the proceedings expected to last approximately two hours.

The article notes that with the arrest affidavit on Cuevas currently sealed, the hearing is expected to reveal more about what happened in the case and what led officers to arrest Cuevas.

Prosecutors will present evidence before the court and a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to move forward with a trial.

According to the Chieftain, a Colorado Springs based attorney has been appointed to represent Cuevas after the head of the Pueblo County public defender’s office, Alby Singleton, filed a motion to withdraw as Cuevas’ appointed attorney due to a conflict of interest.

Cuevas is suspected of killing and dismembering his mother, Maria “Mary” Cuevas-Garcia, 58, and depositing her body in a suitcase in a Pueblo car wash dumpster. The suitcase was discovered Oct. 17 and the son was arrested the following day.

The Chieftain report indicated that the woman’s head, hands and feet still haven’t been found and that Cuevas has been uncooperative.
