Cuevas’ mother ID’d as victim

PUEBLO — A woman whose body was found inside a suitcase and thrown in a dumpster at a car wash here Thursday has been identified as the suspect’s mother, according to the Pueblo Chieftain.

Maria Agnes Cuevas-Garcia, 58, of Pueblo and believed to be formerly from Monte Vista, has been identified as the victim by the Pueblo County coroner. The Pueblo Police Department confirmed that she is the mother of Anthony Cuevas who was arrested on Friday after initially being sought as a person of interest in the case.

Anthony Cuevas, 36, of Monte Vista and a second unidentified suspect were arrested Friday near the Adolfo’s restaurant on the north side of Pueblo, according to the Chieftain report. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and parole violation while his wife faces a possible charge of criminal impersonation.

Attempts to reach the Monte Vista Police Department about any local involvement in the case have been unsuccessful.

Cuevas-Garcia’s body was found in a suitcase in a trash dumpster Thursday and surveillance video released by the PPD shows a person getting a suitcase out of the trunk of a blue sedan and nonchalantly placing it into the dumpster.

Police received several tips as a result of the video which led to the arrest of Cuevas, who was wanted on an active warrant for a parole violation. Colorado Department of Corrections records show that he was sentenced in Rio Grande County to 10 years in 2014 and was later released on parole.

The Chieftain report said Cuevas was set to be advised of his rights Monday and will have his first court appearance on Wednesday. A judge has sealed the case against the son.

It was the city’s ninth homicide of the year according to the report.
