Del Norte senior Narsiso Rodriguez prepares to make contact during Del Norte's Friday loss.
DEL NORTE — Friday afternoon Del Norte’s baseball team matched up with Mitchell’s Marauders. Mitchell would take the victory handily with a 17-1 ‘mercy-rule’ win.
Prior to Friday Del Norte had only played one game thus far this season, against Alamosa, and things didn’t go as planned. Things didn’t go much better against the Marauders on Friday. At the top of the second inning Del Norte was already in a 12-0 hole. By the time the game had reached the bottom of the fifth inning the Tigers trailed 17-0.
At bat, Del Norte’s Christian Velasquez singled into right field. Velasquez would then steal second as the Tigers accrued their first out. Preston Terrell would single as well for the Tigers advancing Velasquez to third. Terrell would then get thrown out at first, making for two outs on Del Norte's tab.
With a 17 run deficit and one out away from getting prematurely put away, the Tigers had their backs to the wall. When a pitch got away from Mitchell’s catcher, Velasquez took his shot andgave the Tiger’s their lone run of the day.
It was however too little too late and their next out would close out the ball game. The Tiger’s game against Sierra today has been cancelled. Which means they will be back on the diamond on Mar. 31 when they travel southeast to Sanford to face the Indians at 10 a.m.
