ALAMOSA — With construction on a new school in the works Del Norte Girls’ Soccer has relocated their home games to Alamosa High School. From the Alamosa field the Tigers (3-1-1) dispatched their league foe Center (0-4) by a 6-0 score.

Before the win goes in Del Norte held the No. 10 spot in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings. That ranking comes thanks to splitting a 2 game series with No. 12 Telluride and going 1-0-1 against fellow league rival No. 15 Ridgeway.

Center has opened their schedule against tough competition with losses to Ridgeway and Telluride in addition to No. 8 Crested Butte.  Center entered Tuesday’s contest looking for their first win of the season, the Tigers were unaccommodating.

The combination of seniors Sophia McConnell and Lacie Jones were a consistent source of pressure for Del Norte. Jones would get the scoring started for Del Norte with 27 minutes remaining in the first half.  Five minutes later and the Tigers were knocking on the door again, this time McConnell would get a shot on goal and senior Brianna Gallegos would clean up the rebound to put the home team up 2-0.

Del Norte continued to hammer away at the Center defense. 15 minutes left in the half and a nifty centering pass from McConnell was put in the back of the net by Triniti Rivera to make it a 3-0 advantage. With five minutes to play before the break this time it was Del Norte junior Kaylie Metz finding some open space on the right and beating the goalie to the left to put the Tigers ahead 4-0.

With the game pretty well in hand Del Norte would add another coffin nail before half time. Tiger Grace Whitehorn aired the ball out on a corner kick and found Lacie Jones on the other end, who butted in a header to make it a 5 goal lead before the break.

Early in the second half Sophie McConnell would finally be rewarded for her tenacity as despite piling up shots and shots-on-goal the Del Norte senior had not beaten the goalie yet. McConnell would bang in her first to push the Tigers ahead 6-0.

With time dwindling in the game the Vikings would begin to strike back with a shot from Gloria Dominguez that got deflected before it could make it on goal. Yahlin Negrete would follow her teammate’s lead putting two heaters on goal for keeper Myka Glover to save. Glover would keep Center off the board to give the Tigers win No. 3.

Center will get their next a chance to notch one in the left column this Saturday when they go on the road to meet Ignacio (0-2).  Game start is slated for 11 a.m. Del Norte will be back on Alamosa field Wednesday when they host No. 8 Crested Butte for another tough league match-up at 4 p.m.
