ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School girls soccer team was dealt its first loss of the season on Tuesday as it was defeated by Durango 10-0 at the AHS field.

“We expected Durango to be a very good team and they were,” said Alamosa coach Claire Lara. “They’re strong, they’re quick and they’re fast and we expected that. I was really pleased with the way the girls showed up. They were connecting passes, they were communicating and they were doing all the things that we asked. I can’t ask for more than the effort they gave us. To Durango’s credit, they’re a very good team.”

The Lady Demons got on the board just five minutes into the game. Mason Rowland had a penalty kick, but it was blocked by Emily Tibbitts. Rowland, however, got her own rebound and sent the ball into the net.

Durango scored in the next minute as Addie Neiman got the goal off a Rowland assist.

Sarah Somrak scored two goals to increase the lead to 4-0 at the 19-minute mark. Carter Neiman increased the lead to 5-0, and Emery Miller scored with 20 seconds left in the first half to give Durango a 6-0 advantage at halftime.

Rowland scored her second goal at the 48-minute mark. Miller and Sydney Ryan both scored for a 9-0 lead at 73 minutes.

Miller wrapped up the scoring in the 78th minute.

Durango outshot Alamosa 34-2. Tibbits recorded 24 saves in the loss.

Alamosa (1-1) opens Intermountain League play on Friday as it hosts Bayfield.

“Bayfield is always tough,” Lara said. “We have to show up and continue working on the little things and continue to build this team. We’re very young. We have a lot of sophomores and we’re starting two freshmen. Our seniors are stepping up. They’re leading a very young team and they’re doing as great job. I’m really pleased with the effort that they’re putting forth so far and we’re looking forward to a great conference this year.”
