Deputy shot while investigating burglary

FORT GARLAND — A Costilla County Deputy was shot multiple times while responding to a burglary call in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches area of Forbes Park, at 4:11 a.m. on Aug. 7, according to the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

The deputy was transported to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in stable condition where he was treated and released, according to Donna Wehe, communications director of SLVRMC.

Authorities sent out a Reverse 911 to area residents because the suspect, Jackie Wampler Jr. was at large and considered armed and dangerous. He was apprehended before noon.

The name of the deputy was not available at press time.
