Dick Davidson honored at fair

VALLEY — Conejos County Rotary of La Jara will memorialize Dick Davidson, longtime club secretary, at this year’s 4-H Livestock Auction at the upcoming San Luis Valley Fair.

Davidson passed away on July 25. He was the club secretary for more than 30 years. After moving to the San Luis Valley from southern New Mexico in 1983, Davidson organized a county-wide Buyer’s Pool in Conejos County so that small businesses and individuals could combine their donations and the Rotary Club would bid for the 4-H animals from Conejos County.

The usual way of doing this requires all donors to be present at the auction and bid on the 4-H animals themselves. The pool idea allows donors to participate without having to be present. The pool also assures that all 4-H members from the county will have a bidder (the Rotary Club) and will not be left out. The pool also allows many small donors to combine their resources and bid on animals that would be too expensive to purchase individually. Thanks to Dick Davidson’s idea, many 4-H members from Conejos County have greatly benefited from the annual 4-H Livestock auction over the past 34 years. Conejos County Rotary Club of La Jara, will put a special contribution in Dick Davidon’s memory into this year’s 4-H Auction at the San Luis Valley 4-H Fair.
