DOC inmate shot attempting to flee courtroom

STERLING — A Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) inmate was shot as he attempted to flee a courtroom in Logan County just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30.

Brian Estrada, 29, was scheduled for a hearing on a criminal charge when he attempted to escape the courtroom located in Sterling.

Estrada was shot by a DOC officer during the incident. Estrada was first treated at a Sterling hospital and later transported to Denver Health Medical Center for continued treatment. His condition is not known at this time.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office requested that the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigate the incident. CBI agents conducted interviews, while crime scene responders processed the scene into Wednesday evening.

As reported earlier, the DOC officer has been placed on paid administrative leave per policy.

There were no other injuries as a result of this incident.

The investigation is ongoing. Information will be presented to the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.
