Emergency exercise set

ALAMOSA — On Wednesday, November 8, local law enforcement and first responders — Alamosa Police Department, Alamosa Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Adams State University Police Department, Alamosa Fire Department and Alamosa EMS — will participate in a joint operation involving a Mass Shooting Exercise at the San Luis Valley Regional Airport, 2501 State Avenue, Alamosa.

The exercise was sought after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and SLV Regional Airport shared a common interest of public safety. As part of the City and County of Alamosa’s Emergency Plan, many leaders from the agencies involved have participated in several meetings in an ongoing effort to maintain open communication for this type of critical incident.

They have consulted with SLV Health Emergency Care to ensure they are prepared and able to accept patients during this mass shooting exercise.

This type of exercise is geared to the preparation for a mass shooting/active shooter situation. Law enforcement agencies typically train on active/mass shooter scenarios at least one time per year, in addition to any cross training with area schools or businesses.

The Alamosa Police Department strives to be as prepared as possible for the widest variety of scenarios, in order to better serve the city and its citizens.
