Employees retire from Alamosa schools

ALAMOSA — “We have the bittersweet moment of celebrating some of our colleagues who will be moving on to retirement,” said Alamosa School District Superintendent Robert Alejo at the district’s board meeting on Monday. A total of five employees retired after a combined 102 years serving Alamosa’s schools.

Darlene Medina worked at the district for six years but has been in education for 25 years.

“I came to Alamosa six years ago and it was a good move for me,” she said. “I learned a lot and became a better teacher. I made a lot of friends here and I thank you for hiring me six years ago.”

Donna Armenta, the elementary physical education teacher who has put on many seasonal showcases, retired after 29 years. “It’s been an honor and privilege for me to be able to have the chance to have taught at least 15,000 students in Alamosa,” said Armenta. “Who’s counting though?

“In all the years I’ve been here, I’ve never once called it work. I’ve been blessed to be able to come to school everyday and love what I do.”

Daniel Martinez retired after working for the district for 19 years. “I’ve enjoyed it,” he said. “I’ve really liked the staff and kids.”

Robin Hall and Christy McBee, who sent in her letter of resignation last May, were recognized but not present at the meeting. They worked at Alamosa School District for 19 years and 29 years, respectively.
