Ortiz resident Eugene David “Bear” Gallegos, 67, passed away peacefully August 12, 2021, at his home with his loving family by his side. Eugene was born on January 7, 1954, in Ortiz, Colorado, the son of Leandro Gallegos and Rose Barela Gallegos. After finishing high school he went on to enlist and serve in the United States Navy. After completing his duties and being honorably discharged he worked as a custodian for many years at the Conejos County Court House. Eugene absolutely loved doing his yard work, going gambling, playing scratch tickets, spending time with his nephew Andrew and caring for his puppy Milo. The two enjoyed their daily rides to town to get beef jerky for the both of them. Eugene cherished the time he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren, family and friends.

He will live on through his wife Diane Gallegos of La Jara, CO; daughter Laura Dominguez of Manassa, CO; son Jeremy Gallegos of Antonito, CO; grandchildren Amanda Gallegos, B.J. Dominguez, Aaron Dominguez, Mylee Gallegos, Gracie Gallegos, sisters Christine (George) Malouff, Theresa (Ronnie) Malouff both of Antonito, CO; Patsy (George) Ruybal of Mogote, CO; sister-in-law Norma Gallegos of Ortiz, CO; brothers Andy (Patsy) Gallegos, Anthony (Natalie) Gallegos both of Antonito, CO; Jimmy Gallegos of Alamosa, CO; special friends Chucky Atencio of Ortiz, CO; Dwayne “Duke” Casados of Manassa, CO; Virgil Ruybal of Mogote, CO; Lawrence Lujan of Lobatos, CO. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Leandro and Rose Gallegos, son-in-law Benny Dominguez, brother Herman Gallegos and one niece Kristie Gallegos.

Cremation was chosen and a Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 1:00 PM at the Ortiz Cemetery with full military honors. To leave online condolences please visit romerofuneralhomes.com. The arrangements have been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Antonito.
