Falcons rally in final minute to defeat Mean Moose

LA JARA – The Centauri High School boys basketball team scored six points in the final minute to defeat Alamosa 47-42 Friday at the CHS gym.

Kaleb Anderson made one of two free throws for the first point of the game, and Carson Bagwell knocked down a jumper to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.

Brant Jackson scored back-to-back baskets for a 4-3 Mean Moose lead, but Anderson scored again and Centauri led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Jackson opened the second quarter with a jumper, but Jace Haslett did the same for the Falcons. Jackson then scored in the paint and Tajuan Jamestown scored a layup and added a free throw to increase the Mean Moose lead to 11-7.

Kamryn Garcia scored in the paint, but Jamestown hit a jumper. Kallon Russell drained a 3-point basket, but Jackson made back-to-back threes and added a free throw and Alamosa led 20-12.

Anderson’s layup cut the deficit to six points, but Jamestown made a pair of free tosses. Chaz Holman, Russell and Anderson all split at the line, but Zack Crowther buried a three just before time expired and the Mean Moose led 25-17 at the break.

Holman began the third quarter with a layup and a free throw, but Parker Gilmore drove for a layup. Holman made two from the charity stripe and he scored a layup and added another free throw to bring the Falcons within a 27-25 deficit.

Bagwell’s jumper tied the score, and Anderson gave the Falcons the lead with a free throw.

Kiler Ullery knocked down a jumper, but Anderson scored on the other side. Ullery then split at the line, but Bagwell made two free throws for a 32-30 Centauri lead.

Gilmore made a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left in the quarter and the Mean Moose led 33-32 at the end of the period.

Jackson and Gilmore both scored to extend the Alamosa lead to 37-32 early in the fourth. But Haslett drove for a layup, and Bagwell made a trey to deadlock the score at 37-37.

Jackson put Alamosa back into the lead, but Russell tied the score. Victor Zepeda made one of two free throws and Jackson tipped in a miss for a 42-39 lead.

Haslett scored with 1:56 left, and Anderson made a layup with 45 seconds to play to put Centauri in front.

After Jackson missed a 3-point attempt, Holman made two free throws to increase the lead to three. Then after a Mean Moose turnover, Russell made two more free throws to wrap up the scoring.

Centauri was led in scoring by Anderson and Holman who both scored 11 points.

Jackson led all scorers with 21 points.

Centauri (12-5, 7-2) will play at Ignacio today.

Alamosa (11-8, 4-5) is scheduled to travel to Montrose today.
