MONTE VISTA — Sargent high school was the location for a cross-class meeting between Sargent and Creede.

Sargent (7-5) entered Thursday’s contest on a high note. The Farmers picked up a big win over league rival Sanford (6-5) this past Saturday.

This season has been something of an off year for the Miners (5-8) as they try to recapture some of the spark they had from last season.  After taking third place at Sangre de Cristo’s Thunderbird Shootout to start the season Creede suffered a six game losing streak punctuated by a road loss to Sangre de Cristo (8-1). The Miners salved their wounds with two straight games against Centennial (4-7) and a meeting with Sierra Grande (3-7).

In the early going Thursday night, Creede showed flashes of what the potential that sent them to the state tournament last year. Both Casper Freedle and Fisher Leggitt were perfect on their attempts in the first quarter. Freedle collected 11 points in the first chapter alone fueling Creede to a 21-13 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Sargent began their comeback by first slowing Creede’s main weapon, Freedle. The Creede senior went from 11 points off four attempts in the first frame to just 2 points on two attempts in the second quarter. The plan worked

Sargent would outscore Creede in the second quarter to go to the half trailing 29-24. Having stifled Creede’s production Sargent focused on scoring points of their own in the third quarter.

Sargent opened the third quarter with a 6-2 run. With one point separating the two teams Sargent’s Kaden Vance took an assist from Eddie Gonzalez early in the third to bury the go ahead basket. Vance stayed dominant inside, cleaning up second chances and denying easy two-pointers in the defensive paint. The Sargent senior led all Farmers in scoring with 14 points.

Having obtained the lead the Farmers would enter the final quarter of play with a 39-36 advantage. In the fourth quarter  Creede would cap 6 unanswered points with Cory Follman hitting the equalizer from the free throw line to tie the game at 42 points.

Vance would come up big once again for Sargent getting fouled and sinking both shots to take the lead for the Farmers once again. Vance was perfect from the charity stripe sinking all four of his chances in the game.

With the lead Sargent paced Creede all the way to the game’s 56-51 conclusion.

Casper Freedle took the lead in scoring for Creede on the night with 17 points and three 3-pointers.

Sargent will go on the road with a good chance to close their weekend on a four game streak.  First the Farmers will be on the road against their neighbor to the north Center (3-9) for a league-weighted game on Friday, and then it's on to Crested Butte (4-6) on Saturday.

Creede will look to end their weekend on a high note when they face Antonito (0-9) on Saturday.
