Felipe Olivarez, 75

Alamosa resident Felipe Olivarez (also known as “Phil” by his friends), 75, passed away January 27, 2018 at his home in Alamosa.

Felipe was born in Sebastian, Texas, on March 6, 1942 the son of Felipe Olivarez, Sr., and Sara Veliz Olivarez.  He married the love of his life, Bertha Amaya on December 14, 1963 in Lockney, Texas.  They moved to the San Luis Valley in 1971 from Texas to be closer to the beauty of the Valley with its mountains.

Felipe and Bertha raised their family together in the San Luis Valley where they made a home and very good friends along the way.  He worked for more than 29 years and loved driving the big trucks for the Alamosa County Road and Bridge until his retirement in 2014.  He cherished spending time with his family and especially his grandkids.  Felipe loved the mountains and the outdoors.  His fondest moments were shared with his family watching football, going to the ‘Early Iron’ car show, camping, hunting, fishing, enjoying nature, and just being together.  In his spare time he could be found tending to his trees, watching the Dallas Cowboys, old westerns, and laughing at comedies on television. He had a passion for classic cars which he avidly shared with his sons and grandchildren.  His favorite was the ’65 Chevrolet Bel Air which he yearned to own one day.

He is survived by his loving wife Bertha and sons, Andrew (Kelli) Olivarez of Mansfield, Texas and Steve (Shauna) Olivarez of Lakewood, Colorado; five grandchildren Caley, Savannah, Steve, Jr., Druidness and Talon; as well as six sisters: Santos, Sylvia, Narcissa, Margaret, Gloria, Sandee, two brothers: Arnold, Teofilo, his Sister in Law Mary and her husband Robert and a host of extended nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Felipe is preceded in death by his beloved son David, his parents, and sister Sarita.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Cremation was chosen and will follow services.

Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements.  Online condolences, tributes and remarks for Felipe’s family may be left at www.RogersFunerals.com
