Fire destroys home in Deer Valley

Alamosa firefighters apply foam on the eaves of the Rick and Rhonda Madrill home Deer Valley Meadows east of here Thursday morning while trying to get access to the home’s attic. Fire Chief Don Chapman declared the home a total loss in spite of the fire being contained to the roof and attic.

ALAMOSA– An investigation continues into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Deer Valley Meadows subdivision about eight miles east of here Thursday morning, but Fire Chief Don Chapman said the cause is not suspicious in nature.

Alamosa firefighters were paged to the home on Otter Lane about 7:15 a.m. and found the attic and roof of the home fully involved in fire. The blaze was contained to that area, but the ceiling collapsed and most of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

Chapman said some of the family’s possessions are probably salvageable

Home owner Rick Madrill said he suspected a faulty ceiling fan may have caused an electrical fire. He said he believed the fan tripped an electrical breaker a few times and he may have smelled an electrical fire.

About 16 AFD firefighters responded with four trucks and were assisted by a tanker truck from the Mosca-Hooper Fire Department. Firefighters were on scene for just over four hours, Chapman said.
