Four SLV golfers qualify for state; one more is an alternate

ALAMOSA – Four boys golfers from the San Luis Valley qualified to compete, and one more will be an alternate at the Class 3A State Tournament. The five golfers qualified at the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament which took place Tuesday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.

Monte Vista finished in fourth place with a score of 257 with three Pirates qualifying for state. Ryker Anderson tied for 10th place with an 85, and Kaden Mellott and Liam Ellithorpe both tied for 13th with an 86. Rounding out the Monte Vista golfers was Kaden Tolsma who placed 41st with a 102.

By qualifying three golfers, the Pirates will be able to tally a team score.

Del Norte finished seventh with a score of 275. Ben Parra was the Tigers’ sole state qualifier as he finished in a tie for eighth place with an 82. The remaining Del Norte golfers saw T.J. Sanchez tied for 26th with a 94, Aidan Medina tied for 37th with a 99, and Reece Velasquez placed 59th with a 124.

Alamosa was eight with a score of 280. Kiko Ruybal tied for 21st with a 92 and he will go to state as an alternate. The rest of the Mean Moose included Seth Quintana and Kyler Liddell both tie for 26th with a 94, and Clayton Gilmore tied for 39th with a 100.

Colorado Academy and Montezuma-Cortez finished in the top two positions at 225 and 236, respectively. Both qualified all four of their golfers for the state meet.

Montezuma-Cortez’s Thayer Plewe was the regional individual champion as he shot a two-under-par 68.

The state tournament will take place Oct. 3-4 at Pinehurst Country Club in Denver.
